Mahmut Anlar + Geo-ID designs Chinese restaurant Dragon’s new outlet in Bebek, İstanbul with eclectic references to Chinese Art Deco and traditional Chinese motifs…
The main idea behind this high-end fine dine stems from preserving the time-honoured ambiance typical of Chinese architecture in a contemporary and mystical way.
Chinese culture and its exotic feeling manifests in the selection of pearls, lighting of varying colours, artworks and patterns, although the overall look and feel is that of modern, refreshing interiors. The concept design also references Chinese Art Deco since the restaurant is in Bebek Hotel by The Stay - also designed by Mahmut Anlar + Geo-ID in Art Deco style.
The qualities of space play a decisive role in the design, plan scheme, low ceilings and the view. Light colours reference an authentic Chinese restaurant as a palette of beige tones lines the interiors and mitigates the flatness caused by the low ceiling. This also instantaneously complements the panoramic view of the Bosphorus waters... enhanced by the generously glazed façade. Custom designed chairs, both circular and square tables in an open plan layout and an enclosed dining area that provides intimacy and exclusivity, cater to heterogenous seating.
The entrance through the hotel’s original wooden vertical staircase captures a glimpse of what is to come: dark grey surfaces covered with textile wall panels with bronze dragons ornamented in colourful stones and pearls immediately transport one into a mystical land.
Guests are greeted by metal and silk pendants illuminating space through glass tubes which include different colours in each one; LEDs light up wooden dragons carved and coated with pearls on wicker separators; a buddha sculpture ushers in positive energy and serene ambiance and as the eye moves upwards, a wooden suspended ceiling is an abstract interpretation of China’s Art Deco era merged with traditional Chinese motifs intrigues in a geometric pattern. Custom graphics weaved on textile wall panels; elucidating Li Bai; Ballad of Four Seasons adorns the bar, whilst poems on Dragon regale guests in the private dining area.
Although has a long history in craftmanship, Turkey does not have much variety in furniture design; here, every fixture is custom designed from scratch to the smallest detail for this project and manufactured in Turkey.
The restaurant depicts a deep understanding of materiality, colour and focus on details. The result is not only an authentic atmosphere but also a complete new Chinese themed furniture collection.
